Let’s get layered

5 tips for staying warm and looking great all season long

Spring and fall have one thing in common: they happen in fits and starts.

Temperatures can be tough to predict. Storms can blow in out of nowhere. And the air can go from blazing-hot to freezing-cold in a matter of hours (and sometimes minutes).

That’s where layers come in handy. Layering is an easy and flexible approach to regulating your body temperature when the weather’s changing fast. It’s also just a great look — especially when it’s done well.

Here are 5 tips to keep in mind as you build your looks for fall:

1. Start with the basics

A classic layered look includes a base layer (like a light T-shirt), a non-bulky middle layer (like a work shirt or light sweater), and an outer layer (like a jacket — light or heavy, depending on the weather).

Experiment with textures and patterns.

Don’t be afraid to take a risk! We’re big fans of combining knits, denim, and leather. We also love layering a solid and plaid shirt jacket together for maximum warmth and style.

Observe the “take it off” rule.

Here’s a handy rule of thumb: your outfit should still look good as you take each layer off. That way, if the weather changes and you need to drop your jacket, you’ll still feel confident about what you’re wearing. (The “take it off” rule also helps ensure that each layer contributes something to your overall look.)

Make it monochromatic.

You don’t have to layer with contrasting colors. You can make everything the same shade, as long as you use different fabrics to create a sense of depth.

Don’t be afraid to accessorize

You can layer with accessories, too. We love complementing a classic layered look with watches, jewelry, hats, and bandanas.
